JAMES F YOUNG, DVM

President & CEO

James Young was raised in the San Diego area, by way of Michigan. Following his time of service in the United States Air Force, he moved to Northern California to attend college, receiving his Bachelor’s in Biology at Humboldt State University (’91) and his DVM degree for UC Davis (’95). Following graduation, he was employed as an associate veterinarian in the Auburn and then Sacramento areas.

In 1997, he along with Dr. Stacey Gillis founded the Atlantic Street Veterinary Hospital which originally served as a general (day time) practice. The emergency service was added in 1999 and then the hospital converted entirely to an emergency practice in April of 2006.

Matt Mellema, DVM 

Medical Director

Education:

University of California Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine
University of California, Davis, Residency in Emergency and Critical Care
PhD in respiratory physiology at Harvard University

Dr. Matt Mellema is a native of northern California (Los Gatos) and received his Bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley (’90). He received his DVM degree from UC Davis in 1994.
Following graduation, he completed a focused internship in Small Animal Emergency Medicine at Tufts University and remained at Tufts as an instructor for an additional year. He spent several years as a consultant for Cardiopet, Inc.

He completed a residency in Emergency and Critical Care at UC Davis in 2000 and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Following his residency, Dr. Mellema went back to Boston to obtain his PhD in respiratory physiology at Harvard University.
